The 2.0 D4D and below have been pretty bullet proof. There have been some reports of the 2.2 cylinder cases starting to crack when put under heavy load regularly. The VW TDI's have been pretty good too, but the new common rail VW diesel engines (Which are also labelled as TDI!) don't seem to be as reliable as the older ones.
