I had a problem on my 2008 1.8 TDCI Mondeo where temp gauge in dash would either stay on the minimum reading or intermittently report 45 Degrees. I replaced the coolant temperature sensor & the dash engine temperature gauge now reports correct temperature Straight forward DIY job if you are handy with spanners and part cost me less than 20 Euro.
