The Leon is built as a family car and so is a prefect fit for the role. Rear legroom is excellent, most materials are resistant to knocks and there is a full array of child-friendly features including Isofix child seat mounts, a switchable passenger-side front airbag and a capacious boot that can hold lots of luggage or a pushchair.

It was the most boring car I ever owned. Now that’s out of the way it was also the best commuting car I ever owned. Super practical, reliable, has all the tech you need and the 1.5TSI evo engine is incredibly well engineered. The thing uses practically no fuel. My best run to work was 58mpg average over 35 miles on the motorway at 75mph.
The lane-change test saw the back of the car pulled around slightly by the van, but even so it was more composed than most small cars. A very firm and definite pull on the handbrake was needed to stop car and caravan rolling backwards on the 1-in-6 test hill, and the clutch needed a lot of slipping to reverse uphill.
